Understanding Myanmar’s Online Business Visa Extensions

Myanmar continues to maintain its e-Stay portal, providing a digital pathway for foreigners to extend their stay without leaving the country. This system is specifically designed for those holding a Business eVisa, allowing them to push past the initial 70-day entry limit. While the portal has been operational for several years, it remains the primary mechanism for professionals looking to maintain legal status while working on the ground.

The process is not a solo endeavor; it requires the backing of a DICA-registered company listed on the Myanmar Companies Online (MyCO) registry. A director from the sponsoring firm must provide a signed requisition letter to initiate the request. The system is strictly for those currently inside Myanmar, and applicants must maintain their physical presence in the country throughout the processing period.

Who Can Use the e-Stay Portal

This service is tailored for expats and business professionals rather than casual travelers. If you entered on a 28-day Tourist eVisa, you are ineligible for this online extension and must consult an embassy or immigration office for your options.

To qualify, you must hold a valid Business eVisa as your most recent entry permit. You cannot have switched visa categories since arrival, and any overstay must be under 10 days to avoid immediate complications. Digital nomads operating entirely independently without a local corporate sponsor will find this route unavailable, as the system relies heavily on company compliance and tax documentation.

How to Manage the Extension Process

The application should ideally be started 90 to 120 days before your current permit expires. Once the sponsoring company submits the digital paperwork, processing typically takes about five working days. After pre-approval, you pay the fees online and visit the immigration office in Yangon to receive the physical sticker in your passport.

  • Stay Fees: $62 for three months, $114 for six months, and $217 for one year.
  • Re-entry Permits: $72 for a single re-entry or $217 for multiple entries.
  • Required Documents: Passport copies with 6+ months validity, Foreigner Registration Certificate (if applicable), and company tax returns.
