Sri Lanka Rolls Out Long-Term Digital Nomad Visa

Sri Lanka officially opened applications for its dedicated Digital Nomad Visa this month, providing a formal legal framework for remote workers to live on the island for up to one year. This move replaces the previous reliance on tourist visa extensions, offering a more stable residency option for those employed by foreign companies or running offshore businesses. The visa is renewable annually, provided holders maintain their tax registration with the Inland Revenue Department.

The program specifically targets professionals who earn a minimum monthly income of USD 2,000. If you plan to bring a family, the threshold increases by USD 500 per dependent beyond the first two. While holders are strictly prohibited from seeking local employment, the government has clarified that foreign-sourced income remains exempt from local taxation.

Who it affects

This update primarily benefits digital nomads and expats seeking long-term stability. Beyond the legal right to stay, the visa grants residency perks such as the ability to open local bank accounts, rent property under long-term contracts, and enroll children in local schools. For shorter stays, travelers can still utilize the separate 180-day tourist extension via the official mobile app, but the nomad visa is the only path for those wanting integrated residency benefits.

Requirements and how to apply

The application process has moved primarily online to streamline visa updates for the tech sector. To secure the visa, you will need to submit:

  • A passport valid for at least six months and a clean criminal record check issued within the last 90 days.
  • Proof of health insurance with coverage within Sri Lanka.
  • Evidence of the USD 2,000 monthly income and a recommendation from the Ministry of Digital Economy.
  • An application fee of USD 500 for the main applicant and USD 500 for each dependent.

Once the Ministry evaluates your documents, the final endorsement is placed on your passport. You are required to notify immigration of any address or employment changes within 30 days of the move.
