Sri Lanka Grants Emergency Extensions for Stranded Travelers
The Department of Immigration and Emigration is offering 14-day visa extensions to foreign nationals unable to leave Sri Lanka due to the ongoing Middle East conflict. Extensions are granted on a case-by-case basis for those whose travel plans are disrupted by flight cancellations or regional instability.
Sri Lanka Grants Emergency Extensions for Stranded Travelers
Sri Lanka has implemented a free 14-day visa extension for foreign nationals currently unable to depart the country due to flight disruptions in the Middle East. This emergency measure, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, addresses the logistical challenges faced by travelers since regional conflict began affecting air traffic on February 28, 2026.
The policy is designed to protect visitors from legal penalties or overstay fees caused by circumstances beyond their control. If flight cancellations persist past the initial two-week window, the government has authorized an additional 14-day renewal at no cost.
Who qualifies for the extension
This update applies to all foreign nationals, including digital nomads and expats, who were scheduled to fly to or through affected Middle Eastern destinations. To qualify for the waiver, travelers must prove their departure was blocked by airline cancellations rather than personal choice.
How to claim the waiver
Unlike standard visa renewals, you do not need to visit the Department of Immigration and Emigration office in Colombo ahead of time. The extension is processed on a case-by-case basis at the Airport immigration office at the time of your actual departure.
You should be prepared to present:
- Proof of the original flight cancellation (email or app notification)
- Your original boarding pass or booking confirmation
- Any communication from the airline regarding the disruption
While this measure handles emergency stays, travelers looking for long-term options can still utilize the Digital Nomad Visa launched earlier this year. That program allows remote workers with a monthly income of USD 2,000 to stay for up to one year. You can stay informed on these and other visa updates as the situation evolves.
