Malaysia Streamlines Visas with MIDA Expatriate System
The new MIDA Expatriate System (MES) is a one-stop digital platform designed to streamline visa applications for the manufacturing and services sectors. This update aims to reduce administrative complexity and increase transparency for foreign professionals moving to Malaysia.
Malaysia Streamlines Visas with MIDA Expatriate System
Malaysia has officially moved its visa processing for the manufacturing and services sectors into the digital age. The MIDA Expatriate System (MES), which went live on March 16, 2026, serves as a centralized platform designed to cut through red tape for professionals and specialized experts. By integrating with existing immigration databases, the system aims to reduce processing times to just 15 working days.
The platform handles everything from company registration to the approval of Employment Passes (EP) and Professional Visit Passes (PVP). It uses a single-login interface and a one-time document upload feature to prevent the duplication of paperwork that previously slowed down applications.
Who is eligible for the MES
This update specifically targets expats working in the manufacturing sector and selected services, including oil and gas, logistics, R&D, and hospitality. It covers key posts with minimum salaries of RM15,000 and term posts starting at RM5,000.
It is important to distinguish this from other pathways. If you are a remote worker or freelancer, this system does not replace the DE Rantau Nomad Pass. Tourists and those in sectors not covered by MIDA will continue to use their respective visa channels. However, the MES now includes the PVP, making it the primary route for overseas-employed experts coming to Malaysia for short-term projects up to 12 months.
Application steps and costs
To use the new system, employers must first register via the InvestMalaysia portal. Once registered, applications are routed through the Xpats Gateway. Applicants will need a passport valid for at least 12 months and must meet specific educational and professional criteria.
The costs for these passes vary depending on the category:
- Employment Pass: RM2,000 MIDA fee plus immigration fees between RM125 and RM550.
- Professional Visit Pass: RM1,200 MIDA fee plus immigration fees between RM180 and RM360.
- Dependents: Eligible EP holders can apply for family passes through the same portal.
