Laos Lets You Cross With $10,000 Cash, No Paperwork
The Bank of Laos has significantly increased the threshold for carrying cash across borders from LAK 150 million to US$10,000. This change simplifies financial logistics for expats and long-term travelers entering or exiting the country with foreign currency.

Laos Lets You Cross With $10,000 Cash, No Paperwork
Laos quietly raised its border cash limit to US$10,000 without prior approval or declaration, replacing the old LAK 150 million threshold (roughly US$7,000,8,000 at variable rates) via Decision No. 140/BOL, issued February 18, 2026 and published in the Lao Official Gazette on March 10, 2026. That's a meaningful jump and honestly, it brings Laos closer to the standard declaration thresholds used by most countries worldwide.
The rule covers both directions. Bringing in under $10,000? Walk through, no forms needed, no Customs notification required. Taking out under $10,000? Same deal , no BOL approval needed, which is turns out a bigger deal than it sounds for anyone managing living expenses or emergency cash reserves across borders.
Go over that threshold and the process gets more involved:
- Inbound over $10,000: Submit a Ministry of Finance declaration form to Customs at the border.
- Outbound over $10,000: Apply to the BOL Foreign Exchange Management Department, prove lawful source and purpose, pay a LAK 200,000 fee and wait up to three working days for approval , valid for 30 days, single use.
One carve-out worth knowing: foreign investors bringing cash for direct investment must declare even if the amount falls under $10,000, so that exemption, weirdly, doesn't apply to everyone equally.
Penalties aren't light, a 10% fine for misuse plus LAK 10,20 million for false information, so don't fudge the paperwork if you're over the limit.
Digital nomads and long-term expats are the clearest winners here, larger cash reserves for rent, emergencies or client payments no longer trigger bureaucratic friction at the border. Short-term travelers benefit too, frankly, since most won't come close to the threshold anyway. If you previously declared cash on entry, keep that documentation , it lets you exit up to that same amount without additional approvals.
The prior 2023 rules set the bar at LAK 150 million, this update locks it to a clean USD figure instead, which is easier to track and less exposed to kip exchange rate swings.
