Italy’s April transport strikes keep hitting ferries and Milan

The disruption

Italy’s April strike wave is already hitting mobility hard and it’s messy for anyone moving between cities, islands or rail links. BluJet fast ferries on the Strait of Messina stopped from 09:00 to 17:00 on April 17, then ATM Milan is set to freeze much of the city’s metro, bus and tram network on April 24 from 08:45 to 15:00.

That means real delays, missed connections and crowded backup services, honestly. The ferry strike is especially painful because Sicily, mainland travel has few easy substitutes and mainland train delays can stack on top of the disruption, which, surprisingly, makes a short crossing turn into a whole-day problem.

Who it affects

Digital nomads, expats, cruise crews and tourists all get caught in this. Milan commuters lose near-total urban transit during the strike window, while ferry passengers heading between Sicily and Calabria face cancellations or long waits and anyone doing same-day ferry-plus-train travel should expect the plan to fall apart.

Naples and Florence are in the mix too. EAV in Naples struck on April 13 and Gest tram drivers in Florence are set for a 13:00,17:00 walkout on April 19, so travelers in those cities should watch schedules closely, because local transit can vanish fast.

What to do

Check operator sites 48 hours before travel, then check again the day before, since Italian strikes often get only the legal minimum notice. Don’t assume refunds will arrive automatically, because these disruptions are usually treated as force majeure and alternative transport may be the only real fix.

A few quick moves help:

  • Build in extra time, especially in Milan and Naples
  • Avoid tight rail or flight connections on strike days
  • Book backup transport early, taxis and vans get expensive fast
  • For Sicily, mainland trips, consider the Salerno,Reggio Calabria motorway for vehicles

Labor tensions are being driven by 8% inflation and stalled wage talks and unions have already warned that more stoppages could hit around May 1 if talks stay stuck. Read our full Italy guide for the complete picture and keep an eye on visa updates.
