Italy Updates Digital Nomad Visa Guidelines

Italy has officially opened applications for its long-term residency visa for non-EU remote workers. Following the publication of implementing guidelines on March 2, 2026, the government confirmed that consulates can now process these specialized permits.

The visa allows nomads to live and work in Italy for up to one renewable year while working for foreign employers or clients. To qualify, you must demonstrate a minimum annual gross income of €28,000, which is lower than earlier projections. This income must be stable, recurring, and generated entirely outside of Italy; working for Italian companies is strictly prohibited under this specific permit.

This program primarily targets non-EU freelancers and remote employees seeking a legal path to residency and Schengen access. It also supports family reunification, provided your income meets the higher thresholds for dependents. Short-term tourists remain unaffected and do not need to follow these residency procedures.

To apply, you should follow these steps:

• Secure a private health insurance policy with at least €30,000 in coverage valid for Italy.
• Obtain a nulla osta (clearance) via the Sportello Unico portal before your consulate appointment.
• Provide proof of six months of remote work experience and a clean criminal record.
• Present a valid rental agreement or hotel booking for your arrival.

Expect to pay approximately €116 in fees. Once you arrive in Italy, you have eight days to apply for your physical residence permit (permesso di soggiorno). If you stay longer than 183 days, you will become a tax resident and must register for national healthcare.
