What Estonia's Digital Nomad Visa Actually Requires

Estonia updated guidance on its Digital Nomad Visa for 2026. Applicants must now demonstrate at least €4,500 gross monthly income from foreign sources over the previous six months (via bank statements, payslips, or invoices). The national immigration quota for 2026 is set at 1,292 slots for certain non-EU work/business permits, though the Digital Nomad Visa itself operates outside this quota. These reflect 2026 rules highlighted in guidance updated on April 6, 2026.

What Estonia's Digital Nomad Visa Actually Requires

Estonia's Digital Nomad Visa lets non-EU remote workers live and work in the country for up to a year and it sits, turns out, completely outside the national immigration quota. That quota, set at 1,292 slots for certain non-EU work and business permits, doesn't touch this visa at all, so there's no race to claim a spot.

The income bar is real, though. Not low. You'll need to show €4,500 gross per month from foreign sources, proven across the six months prior to your application via bank statements, payslips or invoices. That's the threshold, it's not negotiable and lower-earning freelancers will honestly find it a wall. The visa suits employees of non-Estonian companies, freelancers with mainly foreign clients and business owners working remotely. If your primary employer is Estonian, you don't qualify.

Family members can apply, which is good news for couples or parents traveling with kids. A spouse and minor children can use the primary applicant's income proof, they just have to submit together.

Processing takes 30 days. Once issued, you have 90 days to enter, then 30 days to register at a Police and Border Guard Board office. No extensions exist, so when the year's up, you leave and reapply, subject to the standard 548-out-of-730-day Schengen limits. Tourists on short Schengen stays aren't affected by any of this.

To apply:

  • Gather six months of income proof showing at least €4,500/month gross
  • Get health insurance with €30,000 minimum coverage
  • Prepare accommodation proof, a clean criminal record and evidence of remote work
  • Apply at an Estonian embassy, consulate, VFS center or a Police and Border Guard Board office if you're already in Estonia
  • Pay the ~€120 fee and submit your online form

The process is, frankly, straightforward if your income clears the bar. If it doesn't, there's no workaround here.
