UAE and Qatar Issue Emergency Remote Work Mandates
Mandatory remote work directives due to regional security incidents signal immediate safety risks and potential disruptions to local infrastructure and travel in the Gulf region.
UAE and Qatar Issue Emergency Remote Work Mandates
Government authorities in the UAE and Qatar have implemented emergency remote work directives following a sharp escalation in regional tensions. Effective March 1, 2026, these measures aim to protect residents from potential infrastructure disruptions and falling debris linked to ongoing missile and drone activity in the area.
In Qatar, the Council of Ministers has mandated remote work for all government employees, excluding essential health and security sectors. This mandate has already been extended beyond its initial March 2 deadline and remains in effect until further notice. In the UAE, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has recommended that private sector firms transition to remote operations through at least March 3 to limit outdoor exposure.
Who is affected
The shift impacts nearly everyone currently in the Gulf region, including:
- Digital Nomads: While the remote setup aligns with the nomad lifestyle, many are facing travel disruptions due to sudden airspace closures and flight cancellations.
- Expats: Private sector workers are encouraged to stay indoors, and those needing to renew visas or Emirates IDs may face delays as government offices reduce in-person services.
- Tourists: Major attractions like Dubai’s Global Village and various theme parks have temporarily closed. Schools and universities have also moved to online learning.
What to do
If you are currently in the UAE or Qatar, prioritize safety by staying away from open areas and following the latest nomad news for updates on airspace status. Employers in the UAE should note that failing to comply with safety protocols can result in fines of up to AED 50,000.
There are no additional fees or complex applications required; simply transition your workflow to a home or hotel setup and ensure your VPN and communication tools are ready for an extended remote period. If you are stranded abroad due to flight suspensions, document your situation immediately for your employer or visa sponsor.
