Taiwan Updates Stay Limits for Digital Nomad Visas
Taiwan has updated its Digital Nomad Visa policy, significantly increasing the maximum stay from six months to two years for eligible remote workers. The program is available to citizens of visa-exempt countries who meet specific salary requirements or hold existing digital nomad credentials.
Taiwan Updates Stay Limits for Digital Nomad Visas
Taiwan has officially extended the maximum stay for its Digital Nomad Visa from six months to two years. This update, which went into effect on January 8, 2026, represents a significant shift in the government's strategy to attract global talent and address a projected labor shortage of 350,000 workers by 2028.
The program originally launched in early 2025 with a much shorter validity period. By quadrupling the allowed time in the country, Taiwan is positioning itself as a primary hub for remote workers in East Asia.
Who is eligible for the extension
The visa is restricted to citizens of visa-exempt countries. To qualify, you must be working for a company located outside of Taiwan and meet one of these three financial or professional benchmarks:
- Hold a digital nomad visa from another country.
- Be 30 or older with an annual income of at least USD 40,000 in one of the last two years.
- Be 20–29 years old with an annual income of at least USD 20,000 in one of the last two years.
While the stay is now longer, the visa does not allow you to sponsor dependents, and you are prohibited from working for local Taiwanese companies without a separate permit.
Application steps and costs
If you are currently outside Taiwan, you can apply through a Taiwan overseas mission. If you are already in the country on a different visa, you must submit your application at least 10 working days before your current stay expires.
The application requires proof of remote work, six months of bank statements, and international health insurance. Fees typically range between USD 100 and USD 310, depending on your nationality. Once submitted, processing usually takes between five and eight business days.
Keep in mind that while you are exempt from local income tax for stays under 183 days, staying for the full two years will trigger local tax residency. Check our latest visa updates to stay current on tax regulations.
