Southeast Asia’s April flight cuts keep spreading

The program/policy is a rolling set of airline capacity cuts and it’s already biting hard across Southeast Asia. AirAsia, Batik Air, Vietnam Airlines, Thai AirAsia and other carriers are trimming schedules because a jet fuel shortage and price spike, driven by Middle East disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, has pushed fuel above $170-$200 a barrel. Weirdly, the damage isn’t just on international routes, it’s hitting domestic hops too.

The worst part? This isn’t a one-day squeeze. Vietnam Airlines has reportedly suspended 23 domestic flights weekly, Batik Air Malaysia is cutting 35%-36% of domestic service through April 30 and AirAsia is trimming about 10% across the group, so travelers are seeing fewer options, pricier tickets and more last-minute reshuffles. Honestly, that means the cheap regional network nomads rely on is getting shakier by the week.

Who it affects

If you’re moving between Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, this hits budget flyers first, then everyone else. Tourists and expats are dealing with fewer seats, higher fares and occasional cancellations, while digital nomads are losing the easy low-cost connections that make ASEAN trips work.

Fuel shortages are already affecting import-dependent markets and airlines are warning they may add fuel surcharges or keep cutting capacity if supplies stay tight. That’s the real cost.

What to do

Book earlier than you think you need to and check schedules again before you leave for the airport. Don’t assume a route will stay open, because some cuts started in early April and could run into May or even June if the fuel problem hangs on.

  • Watch for fare hikes and surcharges
  • Build in backup days, especially for domestic legs
  • Consider buses, trains or overland crossings when flights get thin
  • Keep an eye on visa updates and route changes before booking
