QatarEnergy Halts Production After Middle East Attacks

The global energy market is reeling after QatarEnergy suspended all LNG production on March 2, 2026. The shutdown follows drone strikes on the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed facilities amid escalating regional conflict. As the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, Qatar accounts for roughly 20% of the global supply, and this sudden halt has sent shockwaves through international markets.

The company declared force majeure on March 3, effectively pausing deliveries to major buyers without penalty. With the Strait of Hormuz largely closed, nearly 93% of Qatar's exports are currently blocked. There is currently no confirmed timeline for when production will resume while damage assessments continue.

Who it affects

Digital nomads and expats currently based in Europe are the most immediate group feeling the pinch. European gas prices jumped between 45% and 52% within 48 hours of the shutdown. If you are living in Germany, France, or the Netherlands, expect to see these spikes reflected in your monthly utility bills soon.

Travelers and nomads in Asia are also seeing the impact as countries like India have already begun cutting local supplies. Beyond heating and electricity, the halt affects the production of urea, polymers, and aluminum, which will likely drive up the cost of consumer goods and transport globally over the coming months.

What to do

If you are planning a move or a long-term stay in Europe this spring, factor higher cost-of-living expenses into your budget. Check your rental agreements to see if utility costs are fixed or if your landlord can pass through price hikes.

  • Monitor local news for energy subsidies or price caps in your host country.
  • Consider locations with diverse energy grids if you are sensitive to price volatility.
  • Review nomad news for further updates on global supply chain disruptions.
