Qatar Airways Operates Restricted Flights Amid Airspace Turmoil

The closure of Qatari airspace continues to disrupt global travel following regional security tensions that began on February 28. Qatar Airways has suspended all standard commercial operations and is currently operating only under a restricted schedule authorized by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority. These limited flights utilize specific "operating corridors" to assist travelers caught in the middle of the shutdown.

While the hub in Doha normally serves as a primary artery for international movement, the airline is currently restricted to repatriation efforts. Flights are being added incrementally, with recent routes serving London, Paris, New York, São Paulo, and Johannesburg. Full commercial service will not resume until the civil aviation authorities confirm the airspace is safe for general traffic.

Who is affected

This disruption hits digital nomads and expats particularly hard, especially those using Doha as a transit point between Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Thousands of passengers remain stranded at Hamad International Airport and throughout the region.

Priority for the limited seats is given to vulnerable travelers, including those with medical needs, families, and those who have been stranded the longest. Beyond Qatar, the regional closure extends to Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait, causing secondary delays and rerouting across the global aviation network.

What to do

If you have a booking scheduled between February 28 and March 22, you are eligible for a complimentary date change within 14 days of your original flight or a full refund of the unused ticket value. Manage these changes through the Qatar Airways app or website to avoid long wait times on phone lines.

Do not travel to the airport unless you have a confirmed booking on a specific repatriation flight. Ensure your contact information is updated in your nomad news profile and booking details so the airline can reach you with last-minute schedule changes. If you are working with a travel agent, refer them to guidelines COMMQ157 for rebooking protocols.
