Portugal’s April 17 Visa Switch Leaves Brazil Applicants Grounded

The program/policy , Starting April 17, 2026, Brazilian nationals applying for Portuguese visas must file in person at VFS Global centers in Brazil and the postal route is done. That means no mailed envelopes, no drop-offs, and, frankly, no backup plan if you miss the new process, which Portugal says should cut fraud, speed checks and add facial recognition at intake.
The change applies to all Portuguese visa categories filed from Brazil, including Schengen short-stay, long-stay national visas and residency routes like the D8 digital nomad visa. It affects ten cities: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Belém, Fortaleza, Recife, Curitiba and Porto Alegre. Weirdly, a convenience that handled a big slice of demand during COVID is now gone and that matters because Brazil sends a huge volume of applicants to Portugal every year.
Who it affects , Digital nomads, workers, students, family reunification applicants and travelers seeking stays beyond the visa-free 90/180-day limit all need to adjust. Dual EU citizens and ordinary short-term tourists aren’t in the same boat, but everyone else, honestly, needs to plan for an extra trip, extra time off and possibly domestic airfare just to get to an appointment.
What to do , Book through the VFS Global portal, then show up with originals for biometrics, photo capture and document review. Appointments open weekly, slots have been moving fast and missed paperwork will slow you down because VFS checks everything on the spot, which, surprisingly, is the whole point.
- Fees stay the same, plus the VFS service charge.
- Mailed applications after April 17 get returned unprocessed.
- April and May slots are already tight, so don’t wait.
