Pine Labs Rolls Out Stablecoin Payments for Travelers
Enables nomads to spend stablecoin balances directly at local merchants in emerging markets, bypassing high currency conversion fees and traditional banking hurdles.
Pine Labs Rolls Out Stablecoin Payments for Travelers
The fintech giant Pine Labs is expanding its reach into the crypto space with a new stablecoin-backed prepaid card. Launching by the end of April 2026, this initiative allows users to fund a digital card with stablecoins like USDC or Tether and spend them at physical merchant locations. While the transaction starts as crypto, the merchant receives payment in their local fiat currency through real-time conversion.
This rollout targets nine countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. It marks a significant shift for the India-headquartered firm, which is choosing to focus on stablecoin-friendly markets while excluding India and China due to local regulatory hurdles.
How it impacts digital nomads
This development is a major win for remote workers and expats living in emerging markets, especially those where local currencies are volatile. By spending stablecoins directly at point-of-sale terminals, travelers can bypass the high fees and slow processing times associated with traditional international bank transfers. It effectively turns a digital wallet into a local debit card, removing the need to constantly visit currency exchanges or open local bank accounts for everyday purchases.
Using the new payment system
To use the service, you will need a digital wallet containing supported stablecoins to fund the prepaid card. At checkout, the conversion to local currency happens instantly at the terminal. While the specific list of the nine launch countries has not been fully released, the focus is on regions where Pine Labs already has a strong merchant footprint.
Keep an eye on regional nomad news for the specific list of supported territories as the April deadline approaches. There are no additional fees disclosed yet, but users should ensure their digital wallets are compatible with the Pine Labs interface once the app updates are live.
