PayPal Expands PYUSD Access to 70 Markets
The expansion of PayPal's stablecoin to 68 new countries offers nomads a more cost-effective way to send, receive, and hold funds internationally across various markets.
PayPal Expands PYUSD Access to 70 Markets
PayPal has expanded its PYUSD stablecoin ecosystem to 70 markets worldwide, significantly increasing financial flexibility for the global remote work community. Previously limited to the U.S. and U.K., the dollar-backed digital currency is now available in regions across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and Africa.
This expansion allows users to buy, hold, and send PYUSD directly within their PayPal accounts. Because the asset is pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar and backed by U.S. Treasury bills and cash equivalents, it offers a stable alternative to volatile local currencies. For nomads moving between high-inflation regions, this provides a way to maintain purchasing power without immediate bank transfers.
Who benefits from the expansion
The rollout is particularly impactful for digital nomads and expats living in countries like Peru, Singapore, Uganda, and Colombia. Users in these regions can now receive payments in USD-pegged funds and choose when to convert them to local currency or move them to external wallets on the Ethereum or Solana blockchains.
Frequent travelers can also use the stablecoin to send peer-to-peer payments globally without the high conversion fees typically associated with traditional cross-border transfers. Business owners in these markets can settle transactions in minutes, improving liquidity for those managing international clients.
Rewards and requirements
Eligible users can earn up to 4% annual rewards on their PYUSD holdings, though availability varies by local regulations. For example, consumers in Singapore and the U.K. are currently excluded from the rewards program.
To get started, log into your PayPal account to check for the "Crypto" tab. From there, you can opt-in to rewards, purchase PYUSD with your balance, or transfer funds to external hardware wallets. While PayPal does not charge fees for buying or selling PYUSD on its own platform, standard network fees apply when moving assets to external addresses.
