New Zealand Issues Urgent Travel Insurance Warning Over Middle East Conflict
Standard travel insurance may exclude coverage for disruptions caused by Middle East conflicts, requiring travelers to verify policy clauses regarding war and airspace closures.
New Zealand Issues Urgent Travel Insurance Warning Over Middle East Conflict
The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) has issued an emergency advisory for all international travelers transiting through or staying in the Middle East. Following a significant military escalation in late February, standard travel insurance policies are likely to fail many nomads. Most basic plans contain specific exclusions for war and armed conflict, meaning disruptions linked to the current situation will not be covered.
Major transit hubs including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar are facing widespread flight cancellations and airspace closures. Carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways have suspended or rerouted numerous services. If your flight is delayed or cancelled due to the conflict, your insurance provider will likely deny claims for additional accommodation, rebooking fees, or missed onward connections.
Who is affected
This advisory impacts any traveler using Middle Eastern hubs to move between Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Digital nomads currently in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, or the UAE are advised to shelter in place if they cannot secure a safe departure.
For those on temporary New Zealand visas, Immigration New Zealand is reviewing cases individually rather than granting automatic extensions. If your visa expires while you are stuck offshore, you must apply for a new one before attempting to return.
What you need to do
If you are planning to travel or are currently in transit, take these steps immediately:
- Check your policy date. Policies purchased after March 1 are almost certain to exclude conflict-related claims. If you bought your plan earlier, you may have a grace period for extensions.
- Contact your airline first. Since insurance is unlikely to pay out for cancellations, the airline is your primary source for refunds, credits, or rerouting.
- Register with SafeTravel. New Zealanders should log their details to receive real-time nomad news and emergency updates.
- Verify medical coverage. While travel disruption might not be covered, standard medical emergencies unrelated to the fighting are typically still honored under most policies.
