Nepal’s Department of Immigration has officially suspended visa-on-arrival privileges for citizens of Iran, citing national security concerns linked to recent regional instability. This change, which took effect in mid-March 2026, moves Iran to a restricted list of countries whose citizens must secure a visa before arriving at any Nepali port of entry.
The policy shift follows a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East that began in late February. While Iranian travelers previously enjoyed the convenience of picking up a 15-day tourist visa at the airport, they are now required to visit a Nepali diplomatic mission in person.
Who is affected
This update primarily impacts Iranian travelers holding ordinary passports, including digital nomads, tourists, and business travelers. Diplomatic and official passport holders remain exempt from these new restrictions and can still access standard entry procedures.
Iran joins 12 other nations on the restricted list, including Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, and several African nations. Travelers holding refugee travel documents, regardless of their nationality, are also required to apply for visas through an embassy prior to their trip.
How to apply
Because there is currently no e-visa option for those on the restricted list, the process must be handled through a Nepali embassy or consulate. Here is what you need to know:
- Pre-approval is mandatory: Airlines will verify your physical visa stamp before allowing you to board a flight to Kathmandu.
- Required documents: You must provide a passport valid for at least six months, proof of onward travel, and recent passport photos.
- Processing times: These vary by location, so it is best to apply several weeks before your intended departure.
- Fees: Standard tourist visa fees still apply, generally ranging from $30 to $125 USD depending on the length of stay requested.
