Kuwait’s KWI Closure Keeps April 14 Travel on Hold

The program/policy

Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is still shut to regular commercial passenger flights and it’s been that way since February 28, 2026. The DGCA says the closure stems from missile and drone strikes that hit radar systems, fuel depots and other airport infrastructure, so reopening depends on repairs, airspace clearance and security checks, not rumor.

No, it’s still closed.
Not a soft reopening.

Officials, frankly, rejected social posts claiming Terminal 5 or other parts of the airport had resumed service around April 13-14. Flight trackers may show scattered movement, but there’s no confirmed normal passenger operation yet and that gap is still the story.

Who it affects

Tourists, expats, transit passengers and digital nomads are all getting hit and the fallout is messy because cancellations, reroutes and delayed rotations keep stacking up. That’s especially rough for remote workers on fixed timelines and for anyone trying to sort insurance claims after a known disruption.

The detour is real.
And expensive.

Travelers are being pushed through Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH) or Dammam (DMM), with some Kuwait Airways and Jazeera services using bus transfers from Khairan Mall to Dammam, which means a Saudi transit visa may come into play. U.S. advisories are still urging caution because the regional security picture hasn’t settled down.

What to do

Rebook early, keep every airline message and ask for written proof if you need to file insurance, because claims get harder once a closure becomes a known event. If your trip depends on KWI, check visa updates and your carrier’s rerouting options before you head to the airport, then confirm whether your new route needs extra paperwork.

The reopening may come in phases, maybe short-haul first, but nothing official is locked in yet, so don’t plan around social media chatter. Read our full Kuwait guide for the complete picture.
