Kenya Updates Entry Rules for Macau SAR Passport Holders

Kenya is streamlining its border policies for travelers from Macau, confirming that Macau SAR passport holders can enter the country without a traditional visa. Under this updated arrangement, travelers are eligible for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes.

While the entry is technically visa-free, it is not documentation-free. All travelers must secure an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before heading to the airport. This system, which replaced traditional visas in early 2024, serves as a pre-travel security screening. It is important to remember that the eTA is a mandatory authorization, but the final decision on entry remains with the immigration officers at the border.

Who is affected

This policy specifically impacts Macau SAR passport holders looking to explore East Africa. It is a significant win for digital nomads and short-term expats who want to base themselves in Nairobi or the coastal regions without the headache of a full visa application. Those planning to stay longer than three months or engage in long-term local employment will still need to apply for specific work passes or residency permits.

How to apply

The application process is handled entirely online and should be completed at least two weeks before your flight. Most approvals are processed within three days. To get started, you will need:

  • A passport valid for at least six months with one blank page.
  • A digital passport-style photo or selfie.
  • Your travel itinerary and proof of accommodation.
  • A payment method for the processing fee, which is approximately USD 32.50 plus service charges.

Once approved, you must print the eTA or save a digital copy to your phone to present at check-in and upon arrival. For more details on staying current with visa updates, check our latest reports.
