Inside Vietnam's Decade-Long Tourism Evolution

Vietnam is currently executing a massive infrastructure and policy overhaul under its National Tourism Development Master Plan. While the framework was established in 2024, the recent activation of a government action plan in early 2025 has put these changes into high gear. The initiative aims to transform the country into a premier global destination by 2030, targeting 35 million international visitors annually.

For digital nomads and remote workers, the plan focuses heavily on infrastructure upgrades, digital transformation, and urban night economies. The government is investing approximately $160 billion USD through 2030 to expand transportation networks and increase accommodation capacity to 2 million rooms. These improvements are designed to support high-spending travelers and long-term residents who require reliable connectivity and modern amenities.

Who is affected

The plan directly impacts several groups:

  • Digital Nomads: Benefit from improved internet infrastructure and the expansion of "night economy" zones in major cities.
  • Long-term travelers: See a greater variety of products, including eco-tourism and specialized beach resorts.
  • Expats: Gain from streamlined entry and exit procedures as the government prioritizes visa policy improvements to stay competitive.

What to know

While a dedicated "nomad visa" hasn't been officially launched yet, the master plan explicitly calls for simplified entry procedures and expanded e-visa policies. This follows the 2023 reform that extended e-visa stays to 90 days and visa-free entry for certain nationalities to 45 days.

Travelers should monitor visa updates as the government pilots new exemptions for key markets. Sustainability is also a major pillar; expect a total ban on single-use plastics in coastal tourist areas by 2030. For now, most remote workers continue to utilize the 90-day e-visa system while the broader infrastructure projects roll out.
