Inside the Destination Thailand Visa for Remote Workers

Inside the Destination Thailand Visa for Remote Workers
Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) has become a staple for digital nomads looking to bypass the uncertainty of short-term tourist stays. This multiple-entry visa is valid for five years, allowing remote workers to stay for up to 180 days per entry. You can extend each stay once for another 180 days at a local immigration office, effectively giving you a full year in the country before you need to briefly exit and return.
Unlike the more expensive Elite Visa or the high-barrier LTR Visa, the DTV targets mid-income nomads and those engaging in "Thai Soft Power" activities. This includes freelancers, remote employees of foreign companies, and participants in long-term Muay Thai or Thai cooking programs. While you can live and work remotely in Thailand under this status, you are strictly prohibited from earning local income from Thai employers.
Who can apply
This visa is designed for digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers at least 20 years old. It is also a family-friendly option; spouses and children under 20 can apply as dependents.
To qualify, you must provide proof of employment with a company outside of Thailand or a professional portfolio if you are a freelancer. The most significant hurdle for many is the financial requirement. You must show a minimum bank balance of 500,000 THB (approximately $14,500 USD) held consistently for at least the last three months.
How to get started
Applications are handled through the official e-Visa portal or at Thai embassies and consulates in your country of residence. You should prepare the following:
- A passport valid for at least six months.
- Documented proof of remote work or a letter of acceptance from a recognized cultural program.
- Bank statements showing the required 500,000 THB.
- The application fee, which is typically around 10,000 THB (roughly $300–$400 USD depending on the embassy).
Processing usually takes two to four weeks. Once approved, you can check visa updates regularly to stay informed on any changes to the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) requirements or bank audit procedures.
