Inside the Czech Republic Digital Nomad Program
The Czech government has introduced a dedicated visa program for IT professionals and freelancers from the US, UK, and six other nations. Qualified applicants can benefit from an expedited 45-day processing time and the ability to apply for a long-term residence permit after one year.
Inside the Czech Republic Digital Nomad Program
The Czech Republic’s fast-track program for remote workers provides a streamlined path for IT and marketing professionals to live in Central Europe. Established in 2023 and expanded in 2025, the initiative allows citizens from eight specific countries—Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, the UK, and the US—to secure a long-term Type D visa in roughly 45 days.
The program offers two distinct pathways. Foreign employees can remain with their current non-Czech companies, provided the employer has at least 50 global staff. Alternatively, freelancers can apply by obtaining a Czech trade license, known as a Živnostenský list. To qualify, you must hold a university degree in a STEM field or prove at least three years of professional experience in your industry.
Who it affects
The program is tailored for high-skilled digital nomads and self-employed specialists. While the primary applicant enjoys residency and the ability to work, family members can join via family permits. It is important to remember that spouses and children on these permits are generally not permitted to work locally. Additionally, staying in the country for more than 183 days in a calendar year triggers Czech tax residency.
What to do
If you meet the criteria, the application starts with the Ministry of Industry & Trade. Once registered, you will apply at a Czech embassy or consulate. You will need to prepare several documents:
- Proof of monthly income of at least CZK 60,000–70,000 (approx. USD 2,700–3,200)
- A criminal background check from your home country
- Proof of accommodation for one year
- Comprehensive health insurance
The total cost for the visa, trade license, and biometric permit is approximately USD 270. The initial visa lasts for one year but can be transitioned into a long-term residence permit valid for an additional two years. For more nomad news on European residencies, check our latest visa updates.
