Inside Mauritius’s Electronic Travel Authorization Plans
Mauritius will transition to a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system in 2026, replacing the current digital travel form. This change will require travelers and digital nomads to obtain pre-clearance before arrival to streamline border processing.
Inside Mauritius’s Electronic Travel Authorization Plans
Mauritius is preparing to transition from its current digital entry paperwork to a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. While the government signaled this shift late last year to modernize border security, the official platform remains inactive. Travelers should continue using the existing All-in-One Digital Travel Form for the time being.
Once live, the ETA will replace the manual screening process with a pre-arrival digital approval. Travelers will receive a QR code or email confirmation that must be presented before boarding a flight to the island. This change is part of a broader push to reduce airport queues as the country manages over 1.4 million annual visitors.
Who the ETA affects
The new requirement will apply to most international arrivals, including:
- Visa-exempt tourists and short-term business travelers.
- Digital nomads entering on standard tourist terms.
- Remote workers on the Premium Visa who are re-entering the country.
Current Premium Visa holders do not need to worry about their residency status, as the ETA is strictly an entry clearance tool. However, it will become a standard step for anyone not holding a Mauritian passport or a diplomat credential once the transition is finalized.
What remote workers should do
There is no immediate action required until the government confirms a hard launch date. For now, entry remains free for many nationalities for up to 60 days. If you are planning a longer stay, the Premium Visa remains the best path, requiring proof of $1,500 monthly income, travel insurance, and a clean criminal record.
Be wary of third-party websites offering "expedited" ETA services for a fee. Official updates will come directly from the Passport and Immigration Office. Until then, ensure your passport has at least six months of validity and keep your accommodation details ready for the current digital form. You can stay informed on nomad news to see when the system officially goes live.
