South Africa's immigration overhaul is, honestly, one of the more ambitious reform packages we've seen from an African nation in years. The Cabinet approved a Revised White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection in April 2026, expanding a points-based framework that's actually been running for work visas since October 2024. The system consolidates Critical Skills and General Work Visas into a single Skilled Worker Visa, with a minimum threshold of 100 points calculated from qualifications, salary, experience and whether your employer holds Trusted Employer status.
The points breakdown is specific: an occupation on the Critical Skills List gets you 100 points, an NQF Level 9-10 qualification adds 50 more, a salary above ZAR 976,000 adds another 50 and 10+ years of experience contributes 30. That's not a vague rubric, it's a hard scorecard and you either clear it or you don't.
The reforms touch several groups. Expats on skilled visas benefit from streamlined processing and, turns out, spouses now get easier work access, not fully automatic yet but meaningfully simpler than before. Digital nomads have a dedicated Remote Work Visa (up to 3 years), requiring at least ZAR 650,976 in annual foreign income and proof of health insurance. Retirees still need to show passive income around ZAR 37,000 per month. Tourists are largely unaffected, the 90-day stay holds.
Full legislative rollout is targeted for end-2026, alongside a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for biometric and digital processing. There's also a 15-month visa extension currently available for expats caught in the backlog, which is genuinely useful given how slow South African Home Affairs can move.
