Here is the Catch with Brazil's VITEM XIV Visa

Brazil’s VITEM XIV Nomad Visa Keeps Remote Work Easy

The program/policy , Brazil’s VITEM XIV digital nomad visa is the country’s main route for remote workers employed by foreign companies or serving overseas clients and it now has cleaner rules after 2026 reforms. It gives you 1 year in Brazil, renewable once for a second year, with a low bar: US$1,500 a month in income or US$18,000 in savings, plus private health insurance that covers Brazil. That’s pretty workable, honestly, especially compared with visa setups that ask for far more cash.

The catch is simple and it matters. You can’t work for Brazilian employers, you can’t register a local company through this visa and you’ll need the usual paper trail , passport, photo, background check, proof of remote work and bank statements or pay slips showing funds.

Who it affects , digital nomads get the biggest win here, because Brazil stays open for long stays without forcing a local hire or investor route. Expats considering a move to places like Florianópolis or Rio also get a practical middle path, weirdly easy if your income is already offshore and you’re happy to keep it that way.

Tourists from the US, Canada and Australia should note the separate eVisa rule that started in 2025. That’s a different process and it can slow entry if you miss it.

What to do , apply at a Brazilian consulate or, in some cases, switch status in-country through MigranteWeb. Processing now runs about 15,30 days, then you’ve got 90 days after entry to register with the Federal Police for your CRNM residence card and you’ll also want a CPF first for banking, rentals and everyday admin.

  • Fee for CRNM: about R$204.77
  • Renewal fee: about R$168
  • PR pathway: possible after 4 years of temporary residence
