Ghana's Free E-Visa for African Nationals: What to Know

Ghana is rolling out a free e-visa for all African passport holders starting May 25, 2026, timed to Africa Day. It's not visa-free entry, which is an important distinction; applicants still go through a full online application and background screening process, they just won't pay a fee to do it.

President Nana Akufo-Addo announced the policy during talks with Zimbabwe's President Mnangagwa, framing it as a Pan-African move to boost trade, tourism and regional connection. The system ties into Ghana's broader e-visa platform, which, turns out, was delayed under the previous administration because the security infrastructure wasn't ready. That's now been addressed, with the portal linked to Advance Passenger Information, Passenger Name Record data and international crime databases.

ECOWAS citizens already enter visa-free for up to 90 days, so this change mainly benefits non-ECOWAS African nationals who currently need a visa on arrival or pre-approval. For digital nomads and short-term business travelers from across the continent, it's honestly a meaningful simplification, even if it doesn't guarantee entry at the border.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Applications go through the new online portal, no paper process
  • Background checks are standard, criminals and prohibited persons are denied
  • Border officers still verify conditions like a valid passport and sufficient funds
  • Non-African nationals continue on the standard paid e-visa track

Ghana has also signed 23 visa waivers since 2025 for Ghanaians traveling abroad and it joins Rwanda, Kenya, Benin and a handful of others in making African travel meaningfully easier. The direction is clear, the momentum is real.

If you're planning a trip or a longer stay, watch for the portal to go live closer to May 25. Don't book flights assuming the system is already active, it isn't yet. Check for visa updates as the launch date approaches.
