Ghana is currently transitioning to a nationwide e-visa system designed to replace traditional paperwork with a streamlined digital process. While the full rollout was slated for completion by the end of March, an active portal is already accepting single-entry applications for tourism and business. This move by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to slash processing times to five business days or less, supporting the country’s broader goal of becoming a primary hub for the African diaspora and international business.
The system allows travelers to submit forms, upload documents, and pay fees entirely online. Once approved, visitors receive a digital authorization to print and present at the border. This digital shift builds on Ghana’s recent policy trends, including the January 2025 move to grant visa-free entry to all African passport holders.
Who is affected
The e-visa primarily impacts travelers from visa-required regions, including Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania. Short-term visitors, including tourists and those attending conferences, will benefit most from the reduced need for embassy visits.
Digital nomads should be aware that Ghana does not currently offer a dedicated nomad visa. Remote workers typically enter on a standard tourist or business e-visa. While these are generally single-entry, extensions for longer stays can be requested through the Ghana Immigration Service once in the country. Members of the African diaspora receive specific benefits under this system, including discounted visa fees upon proof of ancestry.
What you need to do
To apply, you must create an account on the official portal and provide a passport with at least six months of validity. Required uploads include:
- A recent passport photo and proof of accommodation.
- A return flight ticket.
- A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.
- An invitation letter (for business or family visits).
Fees are determined by a reciprocity model, meaning the cost depends on what your home country charges Ghanaian citizens for similar visas.
