Georgia trims the permit rules

Georgia, honestly, just backed off the toughest part of its March labor rules and that matters for remote workers right away. Parliament approved amendments on April 16, removing the 50,000 GEL annual turnover test for work residence permits and exempting remote workers, company directors and owners who aren’t competing in the local job market.
That’s the big shift. The old setup was messy and weirdly strict for a country courting foreign earners, but now the law says the finer financial criteria will come later in a government ordinance, so the current relief is real even if the final paperwork still needs cleaning up.
Who gets relief and who still doesn’t
Remote employees and freelancers serving non-Georgian clients are covered, then company partners, shareholders, directors and managers of qualifying businesses are covered too. Short-term professional activity can also skip the permit step, though the exact list is still pending, which, surprisingly, keeps some gray areas in place.
Local-market work is still different. If someone is actually selling labor inside Georgia, the permit rules still bite and that’s the line the government seems intent on keeping, so this isn’t a blanket free-for-all, it’s a narrower carveout for people earning abroad.
What to do next
If you’re in the exempt group, apply for the work residence permit directly through the State Services Development Agency, don’t wait around for a separate “Right to Work” approval first. You’ll still need a passport, photos, proof that you qualify and income documents, plus fees of roughly 450-600 GEL and processing that usually runs 10-20 days.
The practical upside is clear. The 50,000 GEL barrier is gone, the new C5 digital nomad visa is also on the table and if you’re planning a longer stay, now’s the time to compare those routes with the rest of Georgia’s residence options on our nomad news page.
