France Updates Visa Rules With Mandatory Online Booking
Effective February 2026, France has abolished walk-in visa applications, requiring all applicants to use the France-Visas portal for digital eligibility checks and biometric capture. This mandatory shift aims to reduce processing times by up to 20% and eliminate fraudulent bookings.
France Updates Visa Rules With Mandatory Online Booking
France has officially ended all walk-in visa applications, moving to a fully digital system across its global consulates and service centers. Since February 20, 2026, every applicant must use the France-Visas portal to manage their journey. The shift aims to cut processing times by up to 20% and reduce the fraud risks associated with third-party appointment brokers.
This change impacts any non-exempt traveler requiring a Schengen short-stay or national long-stay visa. Digital nomads applying for the Talent Passport, students, and remote workers are now required to complete their eligibility checks and forms online before they can even see available appointment slots.
For the nomad community, this means spontaneous trips or last-minute relocations to France are no longer feasible. You should now factor in at least two additional weeks for the booking process alone. If you fail to confirm a reserved slot within 72 hours, the system will automatically cancel it.
How to manage the new process
The digital workflow is strict. If you arrive at a center with an incomplete digital file, your application will be rejected on the spot. Follow these steps to stay compliant:
- Use the Visa Wizard on the official portal to verify which documents your specific situation requires.
- Complete the digital application form and upload your supporting files to the Démarches Simplifiées platform.
- Book your biometric appointment early, especially during peak summer or winter seasons.
- Attend the in-person appointment for fingerprints and a facial photo, unless you have provided biometrics for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months.
While the standard fee remains around €80 for most short-stay visas, remember that external providers like VFS Global or TLScontact still charge their own service fees. This transition is part of a broader move toward the EU's upcoming biometric entry systems arriving later this year.
