China Expands 30-Day Visa-Free Entry

China has extended its visa-free entry policy for citizens of several countries, allowing stays of up to 30 days until the end of 2026. While beneficial for short-term scouting, digital nomads requiring longer stays must still navigate traditional business or tourist visa categories.

China Expands 30-Day Visa-Free Entry

China now allows citizens from 50 countries to enter the mainland for up to 30 days without a visa. This program includes travelers from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, and Australia. The policy is set to run through December 31, 2026. You can enter for business, tourism, or family visits by showing an ordinary passport at any open port.

The move eliminates embassy visits and fees. Most visitors miss the fact that your 30-day stay count actually starts the day after you arrive. Multiple entries are allowed. However, you cannot perform paid work under this specific policy.

Eligibility and Limitations

This update is a major shift for nomad news and short-term scouting. The catch for long-term nomads is the strict 30-day cap. If you plan to stay for months or work for a local company, this won't work. You still need a Z (work) or M (business) visa for those scenarios. The move here is to use the 30 days for networking or market research before committing to a longer visa process.

Entry Requirements

Eligible passport holders can fly directly to China. Border officials will expect specific documents. Have these ready:

  • A passport valid for your entire stay.
  • Proof of onward travel, like a confirmed return flight.
  • Evidence of accommodation, such as hotel bookings or a business invitation letter.

Citizens from excluded countries, including the United States, must use the 240-hour transit policy or a standard visa. If an emergency causes you to overstay the 30-day limit, you must file for a stay permit with local public security authorities immediately. Check the China guide to plan your full itinerary.
