Canada Expands Express Entry for Specialized Professionals
Canada has introduced new Express Entry streams targeting researchers, senior managers, and transport workers. The expansion also includes a pathway for foreign military recruits, specifically doctors and nurses, to join the Canadian Armed Forces.
Canada Expands Express Entry for Specialized Professionals
The Canadian government has updated its category-based selection for Express Entry to address specific labor shortages in 2026. This expansion prioritizes candidates with backgrounds in research, senior management, and aviation. Most notably, the system now includes a specialized pathway for foreign military recruits, particularly those in healthcare roles like doctors and nurses, to support the nation's defense and medical infrastructure.
These updates build on existing categories for STEM and trades but introduce stricter experience requirements. Candidates now need 12 months of continuous full-time work experience within the last three years in their specific field. For the new research and management streams, this experience must have been gained within Canada.
Who is affected
This change primarily impacts skilled expats and digital nomads already working in Canada who want to transition to permanent residency. Researchers, university professors, and senior managers gain a significant advantage if they meet the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cutoffs.
The military healthcare stream is more niche, requiring a full-time job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces and at least 10 years of foreign military service. While tourists and short-term travelers are unaffected, these updates provide a clearer roadmap for remote workers in technical fields looking for nomad news on long-term residency.
What to do next
If you are currently in the Express Entry pool, ensure your National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes are updated to reflect the new eligible roles, such as NOC 41200 for researchers or NOC 72600 for pilots.
The application process involves:
- Creating or updating an Express Entry profile.
- Maintaining a competitive CRS score to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
- Submitting a full application within 60 days of receiving an ITA.
- Paying the standard processing fees of approximately CAD 1,525 per adult.
The first draws for physicians with Canadian experience under these new rules are scheduled to conclude by February 20, 2026.
