Australia Tightens Post-Study Work Rules for International Graduates
Starting July 1, 2024, the age limit for the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa will drop from 50 to 35. The update also shortens stay durations for most graduates, significantly impacting long-term residency paths for older international professionals and nomads.
Australia Tightens Post-Study Work Rules for International Graduates
Australia’s Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) program is undergoing a major overhaul as the government shifts toward a skills-first migration strategy. These changes primarily impact international students and expats who use their Australian degrees as a springboard for long-term residency.
The most significant update is a strict age cap. Most applicants must now be under 35 years old to qualify for the Post-Vocational and Post-Higher Education streams. Exceptions are carved out for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders, as well as masters by research and PhD graduates, who remain eligible until age 50.
Stay durations are also being scaled back to align with specific qualification levels. Under the rules taking full effect by July 1, 2026, bachelor’s degree holders receive two years, while coursework masters graduates get three years. Those completing PhDs or research-based masters can stay for four years. The previous pandemic-era extensions that allowed stays of up to six years are being phased out entirely.
Who is impacted
This shift creates a narrower path for older professionals looking to pivot careers via Australian education. While digital nomads don't have a dedicated visa in Australia, many younger remote workers have historically used the Subclass 485 or the Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417 and 462) to maintain a base in the country.
The new framework prioritizes those in high-demand sectors like clean energy, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing. If your degree is in a non-priority field, expect more friction when trying to extend your stay or transition to permanent residency.
What to do next
If you are currently studying in Australia or planning to apply for a graduate visa, keep these requirements in mind:
- Verify your age eligibility for your specific stream before completing your studies.
- Maintain an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent), with no individual band below 5.5.
- Check the national and state shortage lists to see if your field qualifies for future priority extensions.
- Ensure all debts to the Australian government are settled and health requirements are met.
