AirAsia Expands Regional Routes Between Indonesia and Malaysia
Expanded flight routes and a centralized app for Southeast Asia facilitate easier regional travel and simplify logistics for medical tourism in Indonesia and Malaysia.
AirAsia Expands Regional Routes Between Indonesia and Malaysia
AirAsia is significantly increasing its footprint across Southeast Asia with a series of route expansions connecting major hubs in Malaysia and Indonesia. The airline recently added its 20th route between the two nations, introducing a direct connection from Kota Bharu to Jakarta starting June 16, 2026. This follows the launch of daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Batam, further cementing the AirAsia MOVE app as a primary tool for regional travel.
The expansion aligns with broader regional tourism goals, including Malaysia’s push to attract millions of Indonesian visitors and Indonesia’s own international travel targets. Beyond simple transit, the airline has partnered with the Penang Centre of Medical Tourism to offer specialized benefits. Travelers can access 15% discounts on premium health screenings at 18 different institutions in Penang, provided they book through the platform and use the vouchers within one month of travel.
Who is affected
Digital nomads and remote workers based in Southeast Asia benefit most from these visa updates and increased connectivity. The new routes offer affordable alternatives for "visa runs" or regional exploration, particularly for those moving between the tech hubs of Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.
Medical tourists from Indonesia, who make up the majority of foreign patients in Malaysia, now have more direct access to specialized care. Business professionals and long-term expats can also take advantage of the AirAsia MOVE platform, which now integrates over 700 airlines and one million hotels into a single booking interface.
What to do
If you are planning regional travel for mid-2026, keep these dates and costs in mind:
- Kota Bharu to Jakarta: Flights begin June 16, 2026, with four weekly frequencies. Promotional fares start at RM199 or IDR709,000 one-way.
- Kuala Lumpur to Batam: Daily flights are now operational. Special fares starting at RM199 are available for travel through October 24, 2026.
- Medical Discounts: To claim the 15% healthcare discount, travelers should book via the MOVE app and schedule appointments directly with participating Penang hospitals.
